AM I AT RISK?

We do not all have the same likelihood of developing skin cancer. This chart presents the main risk factors for melanomas. Knowing if you are at risk is VITAL in preventing skin cancer. Take a close look at this chart. If you answer 'yes' to one or more of the following criteria, you are considered to be at risk. E.g. : "You have fair skin".

COLOURS

Eyes :
blue / green

Hair :
red / blonde

Skin :
fair / very fair with a lot of freckles

MOLES

If the number of moles on your body is more than 40

Only a dermatologist can identify "unusual" moles that are slightly different. Their presence is also a risk factor.

SUN HABITS

Sunburn : Particularly during childhood

High risk behaviour : deliberate unprotected sun exposure, not respecting sensible sun protection habits, artificial tanning.

Outdoor life : gardening, sports, leisure, as well as professional exposure (sailor, sportsperson, farmer, builder)

BACKGROUND

Personal melanoma history

Melanoma history in your family

WARNING!

Being at risk doesn't mean you will necessarily develop a melanoma. It means you need to be careful and regularly show your skin to a dermatologist. You should check your own skin (My Skin Check is here to help you) and adopt good sun habits.

Nor does it mean that you can't develop a melanoma if you are not at risk; there is no such thing as a zero-risk individual. If you find a suspicious mole you must consult your dermatologist
